What is the Energy Body?

Probably one of the most common questions we have to answer. And at this point, I think our answers have almost become mechanical. So, let’s try and reinvent the answer—starting with what the energy body is and how it works.

Pranic Healing, coming from the Sanskrit word prana, refers to the life force that we are all born with. This force dictates how our body functions, what and how our thoughts are, and how our emotions flow. It’s not only the driving force behind our emotional and mental state but also goes deeper into the body, affecting its ability to heal, to digest, and to expel what it no longer needs.
Like our physical bodies are different but perform the same functions, the energy bodies too are unique yet serve the same purpose—absorbing and expelling energy. It’s always easier to explain this with a physical example, so stay with me. Suppose you eat something different and your stomach doesn’t respond very well to it. You might get a stomach ache, maybe acidity, even a headache. When one part of your body is affected, it often impacts other parts too. Similarly, when the energy body faces a challenge, it responds in ways that affect other aspects of itself. And because it’s much more subtle than the physical body, it’s also far more easily influenced by the environment.
Like our physical body has an immune system, the energy body has its own self-preservation system. But with our current lifestyle choices and habits, this system isn’t being supported—it’s being overused. Which is why emotional and mental ailments are at an all-time high. Even the physical body now suffers because of emotional and mental strain.
The energy body surrounds the physical body, and so, it’s usually the first to be affected in most situations. When its systems can no longer handle the energies coming in, the imbalance begins to show up physically. That’s why stress sometimes leads to migraines or acidity, and depression can cause a lack of physical stamina.
Just like the physical body, the energy body too is made up of different parts—the 11 major chakras, minor and mini chakras, along with the meridians, health rays, and more. Together, they form what we commonly call the aura. As our physical body consumes, absorbs, produces, and expels, so does our energy body.
Here’s the fascinating part—the energy body produces thoughts and emotions. The physical body doesn’t. The brain is like a computer, while the tools lie with the mind, and the products are our thoughts and emotions. Once we understand this, we realise that both bodies are equally important. Nourishing, healing, and exercising them together is the key to a healthy life.
Signs Your Energy Body Needs Attention
The energy body communicates constantly. Most of us have simply not been taught to listen.
Some signs are physical — persistent fatigue that sleep doesn't fix, recurring ailments in the same part of the body, a heaviness that settles in the chest or stomach without a clear reason. These are not random. The physical body is often the last to show what the energy body has been holding for a while.
Other signs show up emotionally — irritability that feels disproportionate to the situation, a flatness that makes even enjoyable things feel distant, anxiety that hums quietly in the background without an obvious source. Emotions are energetic in nature. When they accumulate without being processed, the energy body becomes congested, and the emotional experience becomes harder to regulate.
Mentally, you might notice a loss of clarity — decisions that once felt simple now feel overwhelming, concentration becomes harder to hold, and the mind loops over the same thoughts without resolution. This is often the energy body struggling to process more than it currently can.
There are subtler signs too. A persistent sense of being drained after social interactions. Spaces or situations that leave you feeling inexplicably heavy. A disconnection from your own sense of direction or purpose — not a dramatic crisis, but a quiet sense of being slightly out of alignment with yourself.
None of these signs mean something is permanently wrong. They are simply the energy body asking for attention — the same way a tired physical body asks for rest, or a hungry body asks for nourishment.
Pranic Healing works directly with these signs — not by suppressing them, but by addressing the energetic root that gives rise to them. At The Anvani Centre in Pune, this is where every session begins: with a careful reading of the energy body, followed by a targeted protocol designed around what it actually needs.
I hope this sheds some light on the energy body and its beautiful functioning.
Till next time,
Atma namaste!
